10-piece from Boston with one of the best releases of the last 5 years. Classic golden age Ethio stuff with a riffy guitar undercarriage. Look out for stuff by violinist Keathe Hostetter's other band, Qwanqwa, in June.

Ethiopian saxophonist with his take on warrior music or "shallela", sounding suspiciously like Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler

4 Sons of Kemet – Play Mass (Naim)
Album: Lest we forget what we came here to do

Shabaka Hutchings seems to be inspired by a lot of cool stuff - Ethio anything, Albert Ayler and New Orleans second line music to mention a few

5 Galactic feat Casa Samba – Magalenha  (Anti/Epitaph)

New Orleans band with New Orleans-based samba collective and a song by Carlinhos Brown who hails from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

6 Los Corraleros – Que regreses ya (Discos Fuentes)

The year is 1969, the rhythm is pasaje, the label is cult

7 Meridian Brothers – Contienda (Soundway Records)

Columbia's Eblis Alvarez's new album is inspired by the mad hammond organ innovations of Jaime Llano Gonzalez, now 83, and once given the "Order of the Horsemen" among other gongs

8 Bereto – La Pantalla (World Village)

Bereto are indebted to that off-shoot of cumbia in Peru that incorporated all kinds of stuff including surf guitar - chicha

10 Lila Downs – Dulce Veneno (Sony Music)

From a 2015 album that takes in all of kinds of Mexican music. An album you should look into.

11 Vin Gordon & The Aggrovators – Split Second (Pressure Sounds)
Album: Bunny Striker Lee & Friends: Next Cut

Striker was an early dub innovator who worked with King Tubby.  Vin Gordon aka Don Drummond was one of heck of a trombone player and a founding member of the Skalalites (speaking about ska)

12 New Age Steppers – Love Forever (On-U Sound)

From 1981, a classic cross-breeding of punk and reggae, with Ari Up of The Slits singing on a song by Bim Sherman, a regular on the On-U Sound label
